Frey
Farm Landfill Overview
Engineered
and Managed to Protect Our Environment
Solid
waste that cannot be recycled or is not burned represents
the smallest portion of the waste generated by Lancaster County
residences and businesses. This waste is taken to the Authority’s
Frey Farm Landfill, located in Manor Township, where the best
available environmental protection practices and technologies
are employed.
By the very nature of the Authority’s
integrated solid waste management system, the material that
is landfilled is mostly inorganic and, therefore, produces
a lower amount of gas, odor, and litter. To further reduce
litter and odor, waste is covered at the end of each day with
an inert material—the ash from the Resource Recovery
Facility. So in addition to putting a waste material to a
beneficial use, the ash is substituting for a valuable natural
resource, soil.
To
prevent landfill liquid (leachate) from leaching into the
surrounding environment, a liner system is utilized along
with a network of pipes to collect the leachate, which is
pumped to a local municipal treatment plant. When a portion
of the landfill called a “cell” reaches capacity,
it is sealed with a series of capping materials that block
precipitation from reaching the waste material. Grass is then
planted on top of the closed cell to prevent erosion.
Like all such facilities, the Frey Farm
Landfill is subject to rigorous regulatory oversight, and
the Authority maintains an excellent record of meeting or
exceeding all state and federal environmental standards.
