Doing Your Part: What to do with Special Waste

One key to LCSWMA's success in managing Lancaster County's waste in an environmentally responsible manner lies with you. We need your help in managing "special wastes" in ways that will not harm disposal facilities or the environment. Because if you understand what special wastes are, and how they should be handled, you are doing your part to protect the environment and our precious resources.
LCSWMA accepts and recycles large appliances (white goods) and tires for a nominal fee. Ozone damaging gasses are safely recovered and the metal is salvaged.

Construction / Demolition Waste
If you have home projects that generate a large amount of construction/demolition waste, you can make special arrangements with your trash hauler to pick up the waste, or deliver it to the Transfer Station or the Frey Farm Landfill for a nominal fee.
Asbestos
Friable asbestos (the kind that crumbles) must be wetted, double-bagged and delivered to the Frey Farm Landfill. The rigid kind-- found in flooring, siding and roofing materials-- can be treated as construction/demolition material.
Prescription Drugs
The Office of National Drug Policy has issued the following guidelines for the proper disposal of prescription drugs.
-
Remove the drugs from their original containers.
-
Mix the drugs with an undesirable substance like
coffee grounds or kitty litter. -
Place the mixture in a sealable bag or container.
-
Throw the repackaged drugs in the trash.
-
Do not flush any drugs down the toilet unless the
label or information directs.
In-Home Medical Waste
Medical wastes generated in the home may be infectious. For the safe disposal of 'sharps', LCSWMA provides residents with a complimentary "Safe Clip", which automatically clips the needle and safely stores it in an attached receptacle. For other medical waste, LCSWMA provides residents with a complimentary medical bucket. Simply return the full Safe Clip or medical bucket to any LCSWMA scale house or the HHW Facility for processing.
Waste with Mercury
Fluorescent bulbs, including Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs), thermostats and glass thermometers all contain mercury. Mercury is a toxic substance that LCSWMA wants to remove from the waste stream. You can bring in any of the above items to LCSWMA's Household Hazardous Waste Facility and receive a free digital thermometer in exchange as a thank you.
