Environmental Stewardship: Overview

Where do YOU think the environment is?
The world that surrounds us is an amazing place. Rich with natural resources, Lancaster County's environment must be protected and native vegetation and wildlife fostered. As part of its mission, LCSWMA is dedicated to the establishment of sustainable systems which provide the optimum balance between conservation and disposal of wastes. LCSWMA's Environmental Management System (EMS) is certified by Lloyd's Register Quality Assurance to the ISO 14001 Standard. This framework takes a comprehensive, proactive approach to managing our impact on
the environment.
LCSWMA's EMS policy encompasses such areas as complete environmental compliance, dedicating necessary resources to meet and exceed permit requirements, improving our environmental performance, preventing pollution, and providing environmentally-related education and opportunities to our employees. We're proud of this accomplishment and humbly affirm to be the only public integrated waste system in the United States to achieve this standard.
As a member of the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC), LCSWMA also recognizes the intrinsic value that our landholdings have for local wildlife. LCSWMA became a member of the WHC in order to maximize opportunities to engage in habitat conservation, biodiversity promulgation and public education at our facilities. LCSWMA's Creswell (closed) Landfill and Frey Farm (active) Landfill is certified by the WHC as an official Wildlife at Work site. The program works to create a biologically diverse habitat at the landfill and encourages the proliferation of native wildlife
at the site.
LCSWMA supports the biofuels production market by specifying a 5% biofuel blend in its diesel equipment and transfer fleet. LCSWMA is also a member of the Air Quality Partnership of the Susquehanna Valley, a public/private coalition of volunteers dedicated to improving air quality in the south central region of Pennsylvania.
