Special
Waste
One
key to the Authority's success in managing the County's waste in an environmentally
responsible manner lies with you! Because managing certain materials
called "special wastes", in ways that will not harm disposal
facilities or the environment, requires your help. Because if you understand
what special wastes are, and how they should be handled, you are doing
your part to help protect the integrated system, and in doing so, the
environment.
GRASS
CLIPPINGS
Most
people now realize that the most environmentally beneficial option for
grass clippings is to leave them on the lawn. As clippings decompose they
act as a natural fertilizer; they filter down to the soil where they reduce
water evaporation and encourage new growth.
The
following are some helpful hints for good lawn care: Cut grass often enough
so that clippings do not clump together on top of the lawn. Ideal lawn
height is about 3 inches; the general rule of thumb is to remove no more
than 1/3 of the grass blade when you cut. Invest in a mulching mower or
blade, which chops up clippings.
If
you still prefer to remove grass clippings, call your municipal office
for potential recycling opportunities.
