    Tour Description
    Tours of the Transfer Station Complex begin at the large Transfer Station building, where visitors receive an overview of Lancaster County’s Integrated System. The driving tour continues with a visit to our Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Facility and compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling stations. It concludes with a visit to the Transfer Station tipping floor, where visitors can view site operations up close.

    Tour Length
    The length of the Transfer Station Complex tour is approximately 45 minutes.

    Age Requirements
    Due to limitations of the site and the safety of our guests, children must be at least 8 years of age and accompanied by an adult.

    Clothing Requirements
    Visitors are required to wear clothing that is appropriate for an industrial environment. Closed-toed shoes are mandatory. Sandals, flip-flops or open toe/open heel shoes are prohibited. For the safety of our guests, any individual not appropriately dressed will be asked to refrain from participating in the tour.

    Parking Information
    The Transfer Station Complex is located at 1299 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, PA 17603. After turning into the complex at the traffic light, head towards the scalehouse; but instead of getting in line with traffic, make a slight left into the parking lot located between the large two-story brick Transfer Station building and the scalehouse.     Tour Description
    Tours of the Lancaster Waste-to-Energy (WTE) Facility begin at the Admin Building, where visitors receive an overview of Lancaster County’s Integrated System and Covanta’s partnership as operator of the facility. The driving tour continues, as guests are shuttled around the site, stopping at the tipping floor, control room, ash warehouse and other site highlights.

    Tour Length
    The length of the Lancaster Waste-to-Energy Facility tour is approximately 60 minutes.

    Age Requirements
    Due to limitations of the site and the safety of our guests, children must be at least 8 years of age and accompanied by an adult.

    Clothing Requirements
    Visitors are required to wear clothing that is appropriate for an industrial environment. Closed-toed shoes are mandatory. Sandals, flip-flops or open toe/open heel shoes are prohibited. For the safety of our guests, any individual not appropriately dressed will be asked to refrain from participating in the tour.

    Tour Description
    Tours of the Frey Farm Landfill begin at the Rieber House Welcome Center, where visitors receive an overview of Lancaster County’s Integrated System. The driving tour continues as guests are shuttled around the site, stopping at the landfill gas plant, landfill tipping face and other highlights. Please note that due to construction at the landfill, the wind turbine site will be closed to tour groups until 2019.

    Tour Length
    The length of the Frey Farm Landfill tour is approximately 60 minutes.

    Age Requirements
    Due to limitations of the site and the safety of our guests, children must be at least 8 years of age and accompanied by an adult.

After turning into the entrance, the Rieber House Welcome Center is located on the immediate left (it’s a small stone farmhouse) just before the site gate and scale house.     Tour Description
    Tours of the Susquehanna Resource Management Complex (SRMC) begin at the transfer building where visitors learn how the SRMC functions in LCSWMA’s Integrated System. The driving tour continues to the waste-to-energy building where guests experience how waste is transformed into renewable energy (electricity) that helps to power state capitol buildings.

    Tour Length
    The length of the Susquehanna Resource Management Complex tour is approximately 60 minutes.

    Age Requirements
    Due to limitations of the site and the safety of our guests, children must be at least 8 years of age and accompanied by an adult.

    Clothing Requirements
    Visitors are required to wear clothing that is appropriate for an industrial environment. Closed-toed shoes are mandatory. Sandals, flip-flops or open toe/open heel shoes are prohibited. For the safety of our guests, any individual not appropriately dressed will be asked to refrain from participating in the tour.

    The Susquehanna Resource Management Complex is located at 1670 South 19th Street, Harrisburg, PA 17104. After turning into the site from 19th Street, proceed towards the large brick building. FREE public tours are offered at all LCSWMA facilities, including the Transfer Station Complex, Lancaster Waste-to-Energy Facility, Frey Farm Landfill and Susquehanna Resource Management Complex.

Children must be 8 years old and accompanied by an adult in order to take a tour.

LCSWMA offers free tours to groups of 10 people or more such as civic groups, schools or clubs.

Tours are scheduled by appointment only, and reservations must be made in advance. Children must be at least 8 years old to tour the facilities.

Tours are offered Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Each tour request will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Visitors are required to wear clothing that is appropriate for an industrial environment. Closed-toed shoes are mandatory. Sandals, flip-flops or open toe/open heel shoes are prohibited. For the safety of our guests, any individual not appropriately dressed will be asked to refrain from participating in the tour.

When appropriate, visitors will be asked to wear safety gear, which may include a hard hat, safety glasses, safety gloves, and/or a safety vest. We will supply these items, and they must be returned at the conclusion of the tour.

The following items are prohibited anywhere on our properties or associated facilities:

  • Alcohol
  • Ammunition
  • Any items prohibited by law
  • Controlled substances (ex: illegal drugs and associated paraphernalia)
  • Explosives
  • Incendiary devices
  • Pets/animals (with the exception of guide or assistance dogs)
  • Tobacco products
  • Weapons

Tours are subject to immediate cancellation at any time.

We ask that you call (717) 397-9968 or email avollmer@lcswma.org within 24 hours of your scheduled visit if you need to reschedule, modify or cancel your tour.

Tours are held rain or shine. In the instance of severe weather, please call (717) 397-9968 or email avollmer@lcswma.org to find out if your tour will still be held as scheduled.
