Household Hazardous Waste


Numerous materials used in the home, garage and garden are considered household hazardous waste (HHW). They can cause serious safety and health problems in transportation and for disposal facilities. Lancaster County residents can use LCSWMA’s HHW Facility for FREE. There is no charge for qualifying items, which include things like paint, cleaners, motor oil, antifreeze, pesticides, herbicides, computers, TVs cell phones, fluorescent bulbs and more.

Dauphin County residents should contact the Dauphin County Recycling Center regarding HHW collection and disposal.

From Lancaster County residents, we ONLY accept the following materials:

  • Adhesives
  • Automotive fluids (max. 5 gallons per container)
  • Batteries, including automotive and household
  • Chemistry sets
  • Cooking and frying oils (max. 5 gallons per container)
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Floor and furniture polish
  • Fuel, including kerosene, gasoline and propane
  • Household cleaners
  • Iodine
  • Lawn treatments, including herbicides and pesticides
  • Mercury containing items (max of 30 per month), including ballasts, fluorescent bulbs, thermostats and thermometers
  • Paint, rust inhibitors, stains, turpentine and thinners
  • Photographic and pool chemicals

Paint cans

We accept only the following hazardous waste from small businesses in Lancaster County (we do not accept items from institutions, industries, or manufacturers):

  • Batteries
  • Covered devices (see ELECTRONIC WASTE)
  • Fluorescent bulbs (max of 30 per month)

Important Reminders:

  • Empty containers, from paint and other items that previously contained liquids, are not accepted and may be disposed of as regular trash.

AA Batteries

We accept the following e-waste materials from Lancaster County residents and businesses for FREE at the HHW Facility, with a limit of 10 items per customer, per day:

  • Desktop computers
  • Laptops
  • Monitors
  • Computer peripherals, including a keyboard, mouse, printer and speakers
  • Televisions
  • e-Readers that browse the internet
  • Cameras: photo and video
  • Cell phones, smart phones and peripherals: chargers, batteries, Bluetooth earpieces, air cards, clips, cases
  • DVD and VCR players
  • MP3 players and iPods
  • PDA’s
  • Portable electronic game players and video game consoles
  • Stereos and peripherals: CD players, turntables, amplifiers, speakers (no wooden materials)

All electronics must be intact and will not be accepted otherwise.

LCSWMA reserves the right to inspect, delay or deny deliveries of covered devices and e-waste materials for any reason, at the discretion of our staff.
